Where does our food and garden waste go?
Have you ever wondered what really happens to the food scraps and garden clippings that you and your family put in your green lidded bin?
It’s all being turned into valuable compost that helps our community grow.
Local farms, kindergartens and community gardens are already benefiting from this from this compost and more are lining up to receive some.
In 2024 alone, residents like you have helped stop more than 19,377 tonnes of food and garden waste from going to landfill, where it can take decades to break down and release harmful gases.
We’re proud to say that everyone in our community is getting it right, nearly all of the time. City of Whittlesea resident's food and garden waste bins have a 2.5 per cent contamination rate.
To make things easier and provide you with more options for waste disposal, we also provide every household, including renters, two free hard rubbish collections and a range of free and discounted waste vouchers each year.
