Yan Yean Reservoir hosted a 170th anniversary celebration earlier this year, led by the Friends of Toorourrong community group.

Located near Whittlesea, Yan Yean Reservoir is an important part of Melbourne’s history and has served as a major water source for 170 years. It still supplies clean water to millions in Melbourne’s northern and western suburbs.

During the recent celebration event, it was clear that many locals still have a special connection to it.

“It’s one of Melbourne’s landmarks. It’s a secret that no one seems to know about,” said Rob Walker, whose family once lived in the reservoir’s cottage.

The Friends of Toorourrong are instrumental in raising community awareness of the entire Yan Yean Water Supply System through events such as this.

“We are lucky to have this hidden gem in our municipality – a beautiful place to find respite from the bustle of city life,” said Chair Administrator Lydia Wilson.
