A facelift for Tramoo Street

The City of Whittlesea is upgrading Tramoo Street in Lalor to provide a safer and more attractive shopping destination.

The Lalor Master Plan has been developed in consultation with the community. It recommends improving the appearance and safety of the precinct to encourage more people to visit for their shopping, business, and personal needs.

In June 2023, Council conducted a month-long consultation process. Residents could provide feedback in writing, online or face-to-face on a series of proposed upgrades.

The response was overwhelmingly positive, with a number of suggestions related to parking, safety and streetscape amenity incorporated into the final plan.

Project details

The Tramoo Street shopping precinct project will:

  • improve pedestrian safety by replacing uneven footpaths
  • improve pedestrian safety in Tramoo Street by installing a new raised pedestrian crossing
  • create an updated meeting space on the corner of Tramoo and High streets by installing new seating and bins
  • improve amenity through the planting of new trees
  • address ease and safety of drivers reversing onto High Street by creating 45-degree angled parking
  • provide a new two-metre wide bike path connecting to Edgars Creek
  • create an accessible parking space outside the medical centre with new parallel parking on Tramoo Street
  • install bike racks in Tramoo Street for the convenience of cyclists.

Construction disruptions

There will be some changes to pedestrian access and road conditions to ensure safety during construction.

Every effort will be made to minimise disruption and customers will still have access to all shops.

There may be some construction on weekends to complete the work as soon as possible.

Project timeline

Work on the Tramoo Street shopping precinct upgrade is expected to finish in late 2024.

As of September 2024, the work outside the main group of shops had been completed.

The pathways in front of the shops and either side of Tramoo Street have also been finished.

Contractors are currently focused on the main shared trail connecting to the High Street pedestrian lights.

Once that work is finished, they will construct the raised pedestrian crossing and then upgrade the road to the parking area.
