The City of Whittlesea will build a brand new community centre in West Wollert to help meet the needs of a growing community. The centre will provide a safe and welcoming space for people of all ages and abilities to access services, activities and resources.

Background

Wollert's population is forecast to rise from about 7396 people in 2023 to more than 33,700 in 2041, making the provision of essential community services a priority.

The population surge will increase demand for Maternal and Child Health Services and three- and four-year-old kindergarten.

In response this new facility, to be located at 63 Jardin Road, will offer:

Early childhood education and play areas
Facilities for Maternal and Child Health Services
Spaces for community gatherings and activities
A mini-branch library including work and study spaces.

Project overview

Features of the new community centre in 63 Jardin Road, Wollert will include:

Three-room kindergarten
Two Maternal and Child Health Services consulting rooms
Community lounge/library space
Community hall and commercial kitchen
Bookable activity room
Staff room and office
Community garden and outdoor space
Accessible amenities including a Changing Places facility
Off-street parking

Project timeframe

The new facility is expected to open in time for Term 1, 2027.

The stages of the project include:

Concept design
Detailed design
Construction of centre
Naming of the facility
Fit out of furniture, fixtures and equipment.

Sustainability measures

The City of Whittlesea is committed to being leaders in sustainability. Our objectives for this facility include:

Meeting high environmental standards, akin to a 4 to 5-star Green Star rating
Efficient use of energy and water
Incorporation of sustainable design principles connecting indoor and outdoor spaces
Creating a comfortable and healthy indoor environment with natural light and fresh air
Using eco-friendly materials.

Mini-branch library

The West Wollert Community Centre will have a mini-branch library providing residents with access to Yarra Plenty Regional Library's extensive catalogue of resources.

The library will have dedicated spaces for people to work and study, as well as free public PCs and a printer/scanner.

There will be library staff on-site to assist with enquiries.

Project funding

The West Wollert Community Centre is made possible through funding by Council and the Victorian Government through $6.75 million from its Building Blocks Partnership and $1.5 million from its Growing Suburbs Fund programs.
