Environmental education for local schools

We team up with our kerbside rubbish and recycling services contractor to provide education sessions for local primary and secondary schools about the importance of waste minimisation and recycling.

Now, more than ever, young people are keen to learn about how to manage waste and do their bit to care for their environment.

Sessions are available to schools both in-class and online, with content tailored for the specific needs of each school.

All sessions run for approximately 45 minutes and include a presentation and interactive activity.

Topics available for primary schools include:

Reduce, reuse, recycle

This session introduces the reduce, reuse, recycle principles and how to practice them at school and at home. Students will learn what happens to their recycling. We also discuss issues with contamination.

Worms and compost

Delve into the wonderful world of worms and compost critters!

Students will learn the difference between a worm farm and compost bin and how to look after one at home or school.

Litter in the environment

Where does litter come from and where does it go?

Students will discuss the origins of litter and its effects on the local and natural environment.

Waste wise shopping

In this session we'll learn about different types of packaging and explore:

  • the lifecycle of a product
  • how to reduce waste by changing what we buy at home
  • what is 'waste wise shopping' and why do we do it
  • what types of products can help the environment and save money.

Students will get the chance to put their new knowledge to practice in a simulated supermarket.

Waste audits

Students gain an appreciation of how much waste they produce and the importance of waste minimisation.

They will develop skills to help them minimise their waste and recycle correctly at home and at school.

Topics available for secondary schools include:

Litter audit

Students will consider the different forms of littering, why it happens and its consequences on the environment.

By conducting a litter audit within the school grounds, students can identify any problem areas and patterns of behaviour.

Organics recycling

Students will explore issues associated with food waste and the importance of keeping organic waste out of landfill.

They will also learn the difference between composting and worm farming and how easy it is to set up and maintain each system.

Life cycle analysis

Students will explore the resource inputs involved in each stage of a product's life cycle from production through to disposal by taking a closer look at everyday shopping items.

Waste audits

Students will gain an appreciation of how much waste they produce and the importance of waste minimisation.

They will develop skills to help minimise their waste and recycle correctly at home and at school.
