Street naming guidelines
Know the street naming guidelines
If you're naming a street when subdividing a property, you'll need to follow the requirements set out in our street naming guidelines.
You must submit all of your proposed names for approval via the Proposed Street Name Register.
Contact us at subdivisions@whittlesea.vic.gov.au to arrange a login for the register.
Street name criteria
Please make sure any names you submit:
- meet the requirements of the naming rules for places in Victoria
- don't duplicate an existing name within a set radius as stipulated by Geographic Names Victoria. You'll find the minimum radiuses in the naming rules document, and you can use VICNAMES to check distances
- have a link to a place which we request you provide to subdivisions@whittlesea.vic.gov.au at the time of submitting into the register so we can use this information in our assessment
- are not registered business names that can be linked to the developer
- are not first names or names of a living person connected to the development
- are easy to pronounce, spell and write and preferably don't exceed three words (including feature or road type) and/or 25 characters.
Please submit no more than 30 names at a time.
