City of Whittlesea impound unregistered vehicles, vehicles deemed as abandoned on a road or Council land, and in some instances illegally parked vehicles. In accordance with the City of Whittlesea Community Local Law 2024 and the Local Government Act 1989/2020, vehicles (and anything in or attached to them) that have been impounded for a period of 14 days without being reclaimed become the possession of the City of Whittlesea and can be legally disposed of.
The Community Local Law 2024 deals with unregistered and abandoned vehicles:
- 5.3(1) A person must not leave any derelict, abandoned or unregistered vehicle on any road or Council land, whether temporarily or permanently.
- 5.3(3) A vehicle found on any road or Council land and considered by an Authorised Officer to be an abandoned vehicle may be removed and impounded by Council.
A ‘derelict vehicle’ is considered to be a vehicle that appears to be in a disused state or cannot move under its own power or immobile and may include one or more deflated tyres.
Once a period of 14 days has elapsed since impounding, City of Whittlesea may auction and seek tenders from any interested parties.
For a successful bidder, we can deliver the vehicle to your location of choice upon receipt of payment. Please note, vehicles are sold as salvageable vehicles with no keys and extra charges will apply for deliveries outside of the municipality or for trucks.
Tows within the municipality can be arranged with us free of charge (not including trucks).
Unregistered vehicles must be placed onto private property and kept in accordance with any applicable Local Law or Legislation.
Only successful bidders will be notified.
