Parking long and heavy vehicles

The Victorian road rules state that you cannot park a heavy or long vehicle in a built-up residential or industrial area for more than an hour at a time, unless there is a sign permitting it.

Rules about long and heavy vehicles

The Victorian Road Safety Road Rules 2017 prohibit parking a heavy or long vehicle in a built-up area for more than an hour at a time, unless there is a sign permitting it.

  • A heavy vehicle is any vehicle over 4.5 tonne GVM.
  • A long vehicle is 7.5 m or more.
  • 'Vehicle' includes trucks, caravans, boats and trailers.

Parking a heavy or long vehicle on the road can obstruct the view for other drivers and create a hazard for motorists and pedestrians.

It can also cause damage to a road that is not designed for the storage of heavy vehicles.

Make a report to us

We receive a large number of calls about illegally parked heavy or long vehicles.

You can call us with a report on 03 9217 2170.

Report online

You can also report illegal parking by emailing us at info@whittlesea.vic.gov.au. To assist our investigation, please provide as much detail as possible, including:

  • the vehicle registration details
  • the colour of the vehicle
  • the location and address (if possible)
  • the days of the week the vehicle is normally there
  • the approximate time (e.g. in the morning or evening; all day; on the weekend).

Investigating reports

Our Authorised Officers inspect all areas of the municipality on a rotating basis to ensure as many complaints as possible are investigated.

While it is not always possible to attend complaints when the initial offence is reported, the next available officers will visit the location to assess whether the driver is continuing to parking illegally.

Infringement notices

Any infringements issued for illegal parking may be attached to the vehicle or posted to the vehicle's registered owner. We will issue further infringements to owners who continue to park their vehicles illegally.
