Report a road issue

Find out who manages the road

If you have noticed a road maintenance or safety issue in the City of Whittlesea, the first step is to confirm who to report it to.

Main roads, freeways and highways are managed by VicRoads. This includes mowing the grass on median strips and traffic islands.

We are responsible for maintenance of local roads throughout the City of Whittlesea. We also look after issues to the side of some main roads, including footpaths, school crossing posts and pedestrian fences.

AusNet manages street lights.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Why can’t I report all road hazards maintenance issues on roads to Council?

VicRoads manages the arterial road network across Victoria. This includes all main roads, freeways and highways.

Up until 30 June 2023, we managed the maintenance of these roads under contract from VicRoads.

However, from 1 July 2023, VicRoads took on responsibility for managing the majority of the maintenance on these roads.

There is some maintenance to the sides of the roads that we are still responsible for, such as footpaths and school crossing posts.

Who is responsible for stormwater drain damage?

Property owners are responsible for repairs to their stormwater drainage pipe, from the boundary of their property to the kerb and channel (or drain/pit).

We are responsible for fixing problems with Council drains, pits, and the kerb and channel, including:

  • blocked stormwater drains
  • broken pit lids.

For more information, see stormwater drainage.

Who is responsible for driveway damage?

If the footpath section of a driveway (also known as vehicle crossing or crossover) is considered dangerous, we'll pay for any works required to repair the footpath. The landowner is responsible for repairing the rest of the driveway or crossover, as included in the Vehicle Crossing Policy 2024.
