Kindergarten applications

When to apply

  • Applications for all kindergartens open on 1 February each year, one year before three-year-old program attendance and two years before four-year-old kindergarten attendance.
  • Apply by 30 June in the year before your child attends kindergarten to be considered in the first round offers. Any applications received after this date will be accepted and processed later in the year.

Apply for a kindergarten place

There are four ways to submit your child's kindergarten application.

Online

Step 1.Choose a kinder

Select three kindergartens you'd like your child to attend and rank them.

If you're applying for both three and four-year-old kindergarten, you'll need to choose a program for both years.

To find a kindergarten program:

Step 2.Gather your documents

You'll need to provide the following details and documents as part of your application:

  • proof of child's birth (a copy of birth certificate or passport)
  • proof of your current address (your driver's licence, rates notice or utility bill. The name must match the details on application)
  • if applicable, a copy of your Health Care Card, eligible concession or refugee or asylum seeker visa.

Step 3.If you don't live in the City of Whittlesea

If you're submitting an application and you don't live in the Council area, you can provide:

  • proof of primary childcare, education or employment within the City of Whittlesea to prove connection
  • a signed Statutory Declaration if you don't have the above proof
  • a copy of your refugee or asylum seeker visa if applicable, to allow for priority access.

Step 4.Apply at our online portal

Apply for three and four-year-old kindergarten via our online Kindergarten Portal.

Step 5.Wait for a placement offer

Kindergarten placement offers will be made via email or mail starting in the months of July and August in the year before your child is due to attend. Offers will continue to be made after this time as new applications are processed and other vacancies become available. We do try to offer your preferred kindergarten placement, however due to demand this is not always possible.

Step 6.Confirm your placement offer

Respond online using the kindergarten portal.

Step 7.Wait to be contacted by the kindergarten

You'll be contacted by the kindergarten management about session times and fees.

Under the 'No Jab, No Play' legislation you will need to provide documentation regarding immunisation directly to the kindergarten to confirm your child’s enrolment.

Placement offers: Frequently asked questions

How are applications processed?

Applications are processed according to the priority of access guidelines set by the Department of Education.

Beyond these priorities, offers are made according to the date of application and other locally agreed criteria such as how close you live to the kindergarten or any connections you might have to the service.

What if we don't get a place at the kindergarten we want?

You may choose to stay on a waiting list instead of accepting an alternative kindergarten placement. Places may become available later at your preferred kindergarten due to deferments, cancellations and changes of preferences made by other families.
