Mernda Library

The Mernda Library is currently under construction and anticipated to commence operation in early 2024.

About the library

The Mernda Library is currently under construction and anticipated to commence operation in early 2024.

The 200-square-metre library will be located within the Mernda Town Centre, close to public transport links and amid a vibrant retail precinct.

Yarra Plenty Regional Library will manage the library on behalf of the City of Whittlesea and will have staff on site to assist with inquiries.

The library will include an exciting collection of resources, reading and study areas, and social spaces.

There will be public PCs, free Wi-Fi, self-checkout and printing available for community use, as well as amenities such as a toilet and kitchenette.

Meeting a need

The City of Whittlesea is committed to providing free, safe and accessible library services to residents across the municipality.

The Mernda Library will address an identified community need for a traditional library service and the creation of spaces that facilitate community connection.

Stakeholder engagement commenced prior to the COVID-19 pandemic and featured a range of community workshops and interviews with local business owners, service providers and community representatives.

Opening hours

The Mernda Library's standard operating hours will be:

Monday to Wednesday: 9.30am to 5.30pm

Thursday: 9.30am to 8.30pm

Friday: 9.30am to 5.30pm

Saturday: 10am to 5pm

Sunday and public holidays: Closed

Alignment to Community Plan, policies or strategies

Establishing a library to serve the growing northern growth corridor aligns with two of Council's core strategic goals:

Connected Communities: We work to foster an inclusive, healthy, safe and welcoming community where all ways of life are celebrated and supported

and

Liveable Neighbourhoods: Our city is well-planned and beautiful and our neighbourhoods and town centres are convenient and vibrant places to live, work and play.

Future plans

The Mernda Library will serve the community until a new permanent library is built within the next decade.
