Learn tips and tricks in the art of sustainable, climate-resilient living in a series of free, hands-on workshops hosted by the City of Whittlesea.

The Sustainable Communities workshop series will provide residents with an opportunity to learn how to implement strategies within their own homes and backyards, such as seed saving, keeping backyard chickens and making preserves to name a few. 

Participants will be taught skills they can use now and into the future, while also learning about some of the main drivers of environmental issues and how small changes they can make at home can make a big impact.  

Delivered through a mix of both face-to-face and online sessions, the workshops will enable participants to meet new people and connect with like-minded individuals who care for our environment. The workshops will also include an important segment on maintaining a positive outlook and building resilience through living more sustainably. Participants will have opportunities to take home some goodies, including a jar of preserves that they have made themselves during the session. 

The first workshop kicks off on Wednesday 8 February. Details of each event are listed below or can be found on the City of Whittlesea website:

  • Keeping Backyard Chooks: Saturday 11 February 
  • Home Food Preservation: Saturday 4 March 
  • Seed Saving: Saturday 29 April 
  • Coming Back to Life: Connection in Times of Crisis: Saturday 6 May 
  • Thrifty Gardening: Saturday 17 June 
  • Basic Mending and Textile Repairs: Saturday 19 August 
  • Discovering Biophilia: Mindfulness and Observation in Nature: Saturday 30 September 
  • Series wrap up Celebration and Showcase: Saturday 25 November.

Participants are encouraged to attend all sessions to be entered into a prize draw at the series' end. Every workshop participant will also receive a certificate of recognition and have the opportunity to share their learnings and creations at the celebration showcase in November 2023.
