Mernda respite facility hits major construction milestone

Friday, August 12, 2022

The $2.7 million Mernda Social Support Centre is inching closer to completion with the care facility reaching an exciting construction milestone.

July saw the installation of the building’s impressive steel frame and roof, marking a significant stage in the construction of the much-anticipated support centre.

Once complete, eligible residents will be able to access respite day support to help reduce social isolation by providing people that are frail, living with disability, memory loss (dementia), have limited mobility, and are 65 years and over, the opportunity to try new activities, establish links in the community and improve their overall health and wellbeing.

Mernda Social Support Centre is located next to Mernda Village Community Activity Centre on Mernda Village Drive and will include three activity rooms, a fully equipped kitchen, outdoor area, consulting and quiet rooms, and a Changing Places facility. There will also be a unisex disabled public toilet on site.

The centre also features an environmentally sustainable design, including solar panels and a water tank to re-use rainwater.

The project is jointly funded by the City of Whittlesea and the Victorian Government’s Growing Suburbs Fund.

The facility is expected to open early 2023.
