Alexander Avenue Streetscape

About the project

The City of Whittlesea is upgrading the Alexander Avenue Shops precinct to make it a more vibrant, inviting, safe and accessible place. 

Improvements will be made to the immediate streetscape around the shopping strip, including the car parks, pavements and pedestrian crossings, seating, drainage, lighting and landscaping. 

Update: 14 April 2025

Works are progressing well and are on schedule for completion in late April 2025.

Car park works

The contractor has completed the Alexander Avenue car park and it is now open to the public. Minor works to the accessible parking space is ongoing, with this area remaining closed.

The car park on Boronia Street is complete with line marking. Bollards to the accessible parking space are to be installed.

Shopfront footpath

The concrete footpath in front of the shops is now complete and open to the public. Please be aware the contractor is still attending to minor tasks within the area.

Landscape works

The site will be open to the public for use by the end of April. Depending on the weather, planting to all areas may be completed after the Easter and Anzac Day holidays.

Completed works include:

  • Demolition and removal of existing footpaths, kerbs and car park on Alexander Avenue
  • Installation of electrical infrastructure to Nick Ascenzo Reserve
  • Installation of concrete drainage kerb 
  • Connection of drainage downpipes from each building
  • Installation of exposed concrete in front of businesses facing Boronia Street
  • Installation of concrete foundations for street furniture
  • Relocation of existing foundations for utility services
  • Construction of shared path in Nick Ascenzo Reserve
  • Asphalting of shopfront car park, raised pedestrian crossing and car park adjacent to Nick Ascenzo Reserve
  • Concreting of shopfront footpath 
  • Excavation of shared path from the community centre to Waratah Street
  • Installation of shared path on the corner of Boronia and Waratah streets
  • Car park line marking and wheel stop installation
  • Installation of instant turf in front of the florist.

Planned works to be completed by 25 April 2025:

  • Complete brick paving in Nick Ascenzo Reserve
  • Complete installation of electrical lighting
  • Complete remaining brick seats 
  • Street signage installation
  • Installation of bollards to both northern and southern corners of Nick Ascenzo Reserve
  • Tactile installation
  • Installation of drinking fountain 
  • Final clean of hard surfaces.

What are we doing?

City of Whittlesea is upgrading the streetscape and parking along Alexander Avenue to make your visit to the strip shops safer and more convenient.

What does the project include?

Broadly the works will include: 

  • Updating the pavement of the shopfronts with exposed aggregated concrete and brick pavements
  • Raised pedestrian crossing over Boronia Street at the intersection of Alexander Avenue
  • Custom designed furniture, including new seats, picnic setting, bins, drinking fountain and traffic signs
  • Raised brick garden beds for trees and vegetation
  • Improved street lighting and furniture ascent strip lights
  • Renewed car park surface, kerb and channels and street drainage system
  • Two accessible car parking spaces close to shops
  • Shared pedestrian and cycling path through Nick Ascenzo Reserve

Are shops open during construction?

Yes, businesses at the Alexander Ave Shops Precinct are open and operating as usual. The contractor will provide temporary safe access for pedestrians. 

Where can I park my car while the front car park is fenced off?

There is on street parking available on Boronia Street, situated on the west side of the Nick Ascenzo reserve. 

Will there be changed traffic conditions during construction?

Yes, speed restrictions may be in place during construction. Construction vehicles will be present on Alexander and Boronia Streets.

Will there be any changes to the 559 bus route?

No, the 559 bus route will continue to operate as normal along Alexander Avenue.

Has Council received funding?

The City of Whittlesea has received a $200,000 Living Local Suburban Grant from the Victorian State Government. 

Will there be construction noise?

Yes, construction noise is to be expected. To minimise disruption to residents, traders and road users, some works may need to be performed out of hours.
