Roadside trading

Roadside trading includes food trucks, coffee vans, flower stalls, fruit trucks and more. If you want to run a roadside trading business within the City of Whittlesea, you must follow certain guidelines before you start trading.

  • Whittlesea Public Gardens at 158 Barry Road, Lalor

Step 1.Ensure you comply

The following roadside trading rules apply to you as the business permit holder.

  • Roadside trading is not permitted within 100 metres of an open food business. The exception is if the mobile food truck's hours of operation are outside the existing trading hours of a nearby food business.
  • You must hold a current public liability certificate with a minimum of $20 million indemnity.
  • You must clear any litter from around the roadside trading site.
  • A rubbish bin must be supplied for the removal of customer created litter and appropriately disposed of by you.
  • Preparation, handling and serving of food and drinks to your patrons must be done according to the requirements of the Food Act 1984 and our public health unit.
  • Roadside trading can only operate in the location specified on your permit and for the duration specified.

Step 2.Submit a roadside trading application

You must submit a roadside trading application before starting your business.

In person

Come to the Customer Service counter at our Council Offices at 25 Ferres Boulevard, South Morang and we'll help you with your application.

Step 3.Submit a Statement of Trade

Submit a Statement of Trade online with FoodTrader (at least five days before trading). The principal council and the councils where you are trading will automatically be notified.

Step 4.Be ready for an inspection

One of our officers may inspect the site to make sure you have met all the requirements.
